We’re big fans of variant covers for Marvel’s array of Star Wars comics. While some of them are out of most people’s price range, many aren’t and often provide new and different takes on the Saga’s characters, new and not so new.
The latest, a variant by Mike Mayhew, whose work on Dark Horse Comics‘ The Star Wars is truly a sight to behold, has surpassed that bar. It’s a cover for the upcoming Star Wars: Journey to The Force Awakens: Shattered Empire four-issue mini-series written by Greg Rucka and drawn by Marco Checchetto, which starts Sept. 9.
Set between the events of Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, the series helps set the stage for what happened after the destruction of Palpatine, the death of Darth Vader and how the Empire and Rebellion advanced their causes.
Mayhew’s work bears repeated viewings as there are so many elements to be experienced. See for yourself after the jump in all its large-size goodness.
Matt Moore has been perpetrating journalism since 1985, reveling in Star Wars since 1977 and reading comics since 1974.
