In just a couple of weeks, I, and other Star Wars fans, will be hitting up the stores to see all of the new Star Wars merchandise. A few weeks after that, I’ll be sitting down to watch the second season of Star Wars Rebels. As I watch the show, I’ll be counting down the days before I see The Force Awakens in theaters. Finally, as all of this is going on, I’ll be hoping to go to the first Season of the Force event at the Disney parks (to hold me over for a few years before Star Wars Land opens).
I’m still pinching myself.
After all, it was just 10 years ago that I was walking out of Target with some new Revenge of the Sith toys (the day before my wedding, no less) thinking that this was it.
I can only imagine what it would’ve been like if while I was walking back to my car with my new toys…a phone booth dropped out of the sky and landed in front of me. Then, the future me walks out and says, “Dude! This is not going to be the last time you’ll be excited about Star Wars!”
How would I have reacted?
Perhaps I would’ve tested the future me by asking, “If you’re really the future me…what number am I thinking of?”
Then, Future Me would say, “1138, Dude!”
Then it would be legit. Future Me would go on to tell me about all of the stuff Disney is doing with Star Wars, and I would pass out. Not because I was so excited…but because I’d realize I have to wait almost a decade for it to start.
So, maybe it’s best I didn’t know then.
It’s been great being excited all the time about Star Wars again. My wife and I have been to Star Wars Celebration II, V, VI and VII. The most recent one was the first time since the second that focused on a new Star Wars movie (plus, comics, TV shows, games, and spin-offs). That was so great to experience again.
Just like Celebration II, we were able to go to Opening Ceremonies and see new footage. Way back then, they showed us Yoda fighting with a lightsaber for the first time. Of course this year it was all about the new trailer.
I ran audio of the crowd’s reaction to the trailer as part of the Assembly of Geeks Star Wars Celebration coverage. It still generates an emotional response to listen to that.
As a lifetime Star Wars fan, it really is kind of surreal to think about all the things that are happening now. I mean, I’m even looking forward to A BOOK for heaven’s sake.
A book. No, seriously. I don’t go out and buy books to read! That’s my wife’s thing.
However, I’m such a fan…I HAVE to get Aftermath…because I HAVE to know what happens after my favorite Star Wars movie of all time. Which brings up another point – early reactions to The Force Awakens imply it could be my new favorite (depending on what they do with Luke Skywalker).
I found myself getting another jolt of excitement last month as I started to think about how the podcast could cover the premiere. Then I realized we will be covering TWO Star Wars movies in the next year!
It may sound kind of funny, but I’m also excited about what I don’t know. It’s clear Disney is looking into several great ideas for the future of the franchise…things they can’t tell us about yet. That means unlike last time, there really is no end in sight.
I can live with that.
After all, I remember when all we had were a few books, a limited selection of toys, some great memories and not much else.
So, things have been great and they’re about to get so much better. In 2015, I don’t need future self to drop out of the sky and tell me what’s going to happen next. I’m excited about what I know and am content knowing that it’s not going to end anytime soon.
