The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
October 2016

Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the recent and upcoming releases in Star Wars storytelling.

Recent Releases (September 16 – October 15)

starwars23Star Wars, Issue #023: The Last Flight of the Harbinger, Part III
Jason Aaron, writer / Jorge Molina, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
September 28, 2016

Time Frame: Between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, following Star Wars, Issue #022.

Canon Influence: This is the first issue we really get to see Luke, Leia, and Han together for an entire issue in a comic. Throw in Sana Starros and C-3P0 and you have a recipe for some good ol’ fashioned classic trilogy action. This story continues to show some of the action that the Rebellion was taking against the Empire.

Companion Stories: Star Wars Issues 021 and 022 are important reads, and, if you are just now joining the series, going back to take a look at Star Wars, Issues #004-#006, and #008-#012 will help frame up the backstory for both Sana Starros and the special group of Stormtroopers who appear at the end of this story.

Emily Kate Johnston
Young Adult Novel by Disney-Lucasfilm
Press October 11, 2016

Time Frame: Between Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Episode IV: A New Hope, following a year after the events of Order 66.

Canon Influence: This novel is smack dab in the middle of Ahoska’s overall narrative arc. If you want to know what happened to Ahsoka after she left the Jedi order at the end of season 5 of The Clone Wars, then this is the book for you. Very exciting information regarding the formation of the Empire, status of the clones, and state of the force.

Companion Stories: This story reads well on its own, but if you want to get the full benefit of its contribution to the Star Wars canon, make sure you are familiar with Ahsoka’s stories in The Clone Wars and all of season 1 and 2 of Star Wars Rebels.

Star Wars: Darth Vader, Issue #025: End of Games, Part V
Kieron Gillen, writer / Salvador Larroca, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
October 12, 2016

Time Frame: Between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, following Star Wars: Darth Vader, Issue #024.

Canon Influence: This final issue in the Darth Vader series is nothing short of incredible, and really helps to shape who Darth Vader is as we move into The Empire Strikes Back. Every subtle nuance of his character comes out as we see him at his best (worst?).

Companion Stories: Be sure to catch up on the entire Darth Vader series before reading this particular issue. Every story arc comes to bear as we conclude this 25 issue series which as finally reached its narrative conclusion. Vader’s history from the prequel era is also very influential to this story so if you need to brush up, sounds like its time to watch Star Wars.

Comic Book by Marvel Comics
October 12, 2016

Time Frame: Between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, following Star Wars: Han Solo, Issue #003.

Canon Influence: More so than anything, the Han Solo comics are showing the conflict within himself, between his duty to the rebellion, and his love of the challenge of the race. Han wants to prove himself, and the Dragon Void Run is turning out to be his ultimate proving ground.

Companion Stories: So far, the Han Solo comics are quite self-sufficient, with no real link to other canon stories.  This is the beginning of Han Solo’s taste in racing, which really plays into where we see him in Bloodline.

Chuck Wendig, writer / Luke Ross, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
October 12, 2016

Time Frame: Retelling the events of Episode VII: The Force Awakens.

Canon Influence: As I’m assembling this article, I have not yet had a chance to dive into this particular issue, but I do know that it covers the period of time from Ray’s through to the attempt to rescue her. This book gives us a great still shot look at the film while occasionally adding something interesting, and I look forward to getting into this one soon.

Companion Stories: Aside from its previous issue, as long as you are familiar with the film, this comic will read well.

Upcoming Releases (October 16 – November 15)

Martin Fisher, writer / Bob Molesworth, artist
“Secrets of Sienar” – Rebels Magazine, No. 7

Know Before You Read: We have finally moved into the era of Season 2 of Star Wars Rebels with these comics, so be sure that you ground yourself in that time frame, after the encounter with Darth Vader before the arrival of Maul. Ahsoka begins to play a part in these stories.

stl018436“Turning Point”- Star Wars Insider #169
Jason Hough
Short Story by Titan Magazine October 26, 2016

Know Before You Read: This short story takes place shortly after Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, but is not tied to any existing large-scale form that we know of. Go into it with knowledge of its era and we will see what we get!

Jason Aaron, writer / Jorge Molina, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
October 26, 2016

Know Before You Read: The SCAR squad of Stormtroopers have finally made their appearance on the stolen star destroyer Harbinger. Catch up on Star Wars #021-#023 before reading this issue for the most enjoyment.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #007
Charles Soule, writer / Phil Noto, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
October 26, 2016

Know Before You Read: While knowledge of the rest of the Poe Dameron story could be useful, we are beginning a new arch with Issue #007, making this a great entry point into the series. To get full value out of this comic, I would suggest rereading Issues #001-#006 and catching the Poe section in Greg Rucka’s Before the Awakening novel.

Comic Book by Marvel Comics
November 9, 2016

Know Before You Read: This is the final issue in this mini-series. While it may connect to something else that we have yet to discover, the entire series has been pretty self-sufficient as far as narrative elements are concern.

The Force Awakens 6The Force Awakens, Issue #006
Chuck Wendig, writer / Luke Ross, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics November 9, 2016

Know Before You Read: This is the final issue in this adaptation, concluding this look at Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

catalyst_thestawwarsrpCatalyst: A Rogue One Story
James Luceno
Novel by Del Rey
November 9, 2016

Know Before You Read: This is a prequel story to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, focusing on Jyn Erso’s father Galen, and apparently takes place during the Clone Wars era of the Star Wars universe. It will be interesting to see if elements from that era tie into this film, but, perhaps, if you have the time, a re-watch of Episodes II and III could be warranted before reading this novel. (Pre-order here)
