Star Wars: The Acting Awakens — A Guest Blog by Eric Onkenhout

Star Wars is typically known for its masterful story-telling, and its ground breaking special effects. However, the one aspect that Star Wars is not typically known for is its acting. That is why I want to discuss some examples of great acting performances in Star Wars. When Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope premiered in May 1977, movies with such a profound classic tale of good vs. evil were not the norm–hence the long-lasting effect it had on the following generations. The same goes for the special effects; a whole entire special effects division (ILM) had to be built in order to perform the incredible effects that have influenced movies to this day.

Missing the Point:
An Analysis of Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Part I – The Film
— A Guest Blog by Daniel Noa

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a massive hit. Given the caliber of the filmmakers, from Hollywood it-boy J.J. Abrams, to Kathleen Kennedy, elder-stateswoman of Hollywood, to the various production designers and department heads, and finally of course Harrison Ford, this should not be surprising. So it pains me to write that I was incredibly disappointed with the film. Given all the love I see for this movie on the internet, this may frustrate you. I do not want to diminish your enjoyment of this film, so rather than take to Twitter, I have written this 2-part essay to explain my issues with the movie, both as a film (Part I) and as a Star Wars story (Part II), in as clear and logical a way as possible.

OSCAR ISAAC ON HIS STAR WARS’ CHARACTER, THE SEQUELS, AND RELIGION

–GQ

New York, N.Y.—“J.J. basically told me it was an intense, heroic, dramatic character and he hadn’t seen me do that,” Oscar Isaac tells GQ’s Brett Martin of his first time reading from the Star Wars script for J.J. Abrams. “I didn’t know if I could make it interesting. I didn’t know why me and not anybody else.” Abrams sees it differently: “Oscar is a far more sophisticated actor than one might get for a role that could be looked at as just a daring, kick-a** pilot.”
