IDW Star Wars Comics Review: Star Wars: Forces of Destiny — Hera

This review of Star Wars: Forces of Destiny — Hera contains minor spoilers.

The one thing Star Wars has always lacked is more Selonians. What Star Wars comics have lacked is Hera Syndulla.

Well, no more and for that we owe a debt we can never repay to writer Devin Grayson, artist Eva Widermann, colorist Monica Kubina and letterer Tom B. Long.

It’s a stirring combination and they mesh quite nicely within the pages of IDW Publishing’s third issue in the Star Wars: Forces of Destiny series, this one focused on Hera.

Melinda’s Brew: Star Wars Fandom In Good Hands

Melinda's Brew

One’s a little bit light side. One’s a little bit dark side. They balance each other out. Which seems almost fitting since the co-hosts of the podcast “Star Wars Geek Girl” – California’s Lizzy Perales and Pennsylvania’s Zoe Hinton – pretty much bookend the country. Thanks to the internet, the two teens “met”, forged a friendship, and wound up co-hosting the weekly podcast. The pair just celebrated their two-year anniversary.

Listening to the teens talk about Star Wars and whatever else they deem noteworthy every week, you’d never guess they didn’t meet until Celebration Orlando this past April.

Truly Wonderful, the Memories of Star Wars Celebration Are!

As I sit down to write this, there are only 25 days left until Star Wars Celebration Orlando!  My, how time flies. It feels like just yesterday we were getting the news on starwars.com that the next celebration would be in Orlando – once again, I’m overwhelmed with a whirlwind of emotions. No worries, at this point I’m a veteran of Star Wars Celebrations as this one will mark my fourth Force-tastic adventure of being immersed in the galaxy far, far away. In other words, all is right in the world.

And so, in light of Star Wars Celebration, I thought it would be fitting to share some of my past celebration experiences with all of you. Hopefully you’ll find some joy in my personal stories and maybe you’ll even learn something about me you didn’t already know. Ready. Set. Go!

The Growth of Kanan Jarrus
By Mike DeRose

Quietly growing in the background of Rebels, behind Ezra, behind Ahsoka and Vader, behind the Rebellion, is Kanan Jarrus. The season two finale not only solidified how far this once in-hiding “nobody” has come, but also how losing his sight will only lead to him becoming a stronger Jedi and teacher.

For those unfamiliar with Kanan’s back story (which is fleshed out in the Kanan comics as well as in the novel A New Dawn) his true name is Caleb Dume and he was the apprentice of Depa Billaba. After surviving Order 66, Caleb took the name of Kanan Jarrus, making his way around the galaxy doing small jobs but never staying in one place too long (and avoiding attachments). It was not until he met Hera Syndulla that he found a small bit of purpose.
