What I Learned From Spiderman: Homecoming

Jay’s Galactic Expressions

Warning: Major Spoilers ahead for Spiderman: Homecoming!

Everywhere I look in our society today, I am bombarded by messages of “girl power.” Some are very positive, encouraging and empowering. Others leave me – a grown woman – with the proverbial “very bad feeling” about what my younger female counterparts may eventually be molded into.

With the release of the cartoon shorts Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, there has been a noticeable spike in the conversations regarding female-centered role-models, and how those role-models are being utilized to market not only merchandise but the message of “what it means to be a girl.” I love the series, and I believe it sends positive messages that transcend all human-imposed boundaries. However universally acceptable I feel the series to be, there exist those who oppose and/or challenge that notion, for whatever personal motives or agendas they may have. As Palpatine said: “so be it.” I’m not here to change anyone’s beliefs or opinions, but I do have some things to get off my chest.

The Gruesome Twosome

**SPOILERS** for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

The release of Rogue One has the world buzzing. The first ever live-action standalone Star Wars film has proved to be a hit. While the film doesn’t tie directly to the Skywalker Story that permeates the main saga films, it isn’t without some connections to those films. Most notably being Darth Vader and Grand Moff Tarkin. With the film’s obvious lead up to A New Hope it makes logical sense for these two baddies to have appeared. What Rogue One is able to accomplish, beyond giving us an impactful story about hope, is it fundamentally changes the way we now look at Darth Vader and Tarkin in A New Hope. Spoiler alert: I like it.

From Legends to Canon: Five Characters that Deserve a Shot

“There’s always a bit of truth in legends.” -Ahsoka Tano

Once upon a time, the Expanded Universe (EU) of Star Wars opened up an outlet for me that helped sate my unyielding desire for all things in a Galaxy Far, Far Away. I consider myself a relative newbie to the now-titled Legends category of knowledge and stories, having only come into it about 10 years ago, but I have nonetheless become an intense follower. I have read – and own – countless novels, and have invested myself emotionally and mentally in its lore. When the announcement came in April of 2014, rendering the EU as basically a defunct sector of the Star Wars timeline, I was absolutely heartbroken. First, the cancellation of the Clone Wars series and now, this?! I didn’t know how much more my fangirl heart and soul could take!

Loyalty: The Underrated Theme of Star Wars

ROTJ_GroupAs part of their five questions for new guests to Coffee with Kenobi, Dan and Cory ask their guests “what themes or messages from Star Wars resonate with you?” I’ve always been intrigued by the answers that guests have given. Of all the questions they ask, that is probably the one I have considered the most. Well, it comes after favorite Star Wars film and favorite character, but third place isn’t bad. Right? I digress. A recent episode of Coffee with Kenobi had me pondering the themes and messages from Star Wars again. I realized that perhaps one of the more underrated themes from the movies is “loyalty.”

Rebels Reconnaissance: “Rebel Resolve” Review

*Spoiler warning: This review contains spoilers for the STAR WARS REBELS episode “Rebel Resolve.”

One thing that has become very clear from the last few episodes of this first season of STAR WARS REBELS (and James Luceno’s outstanding TARKIN novel) is that the Empire’s greatest loss at the Battle of Yavin was not the Death Star; rather, it was Grand Moff Tarkin.  As we witnessed in RETURN OF THE JEDI, mobile armored battle stations (even the moon-sized ones) can be rebuilt.  But a military strategist on the level of Wilhuff Tarkin is not so easily replaced.

Grand Moff Tarkin Returns in Star Wars Rebels – “Call to Action”

Spoilers for “Call to Action”

Tonight’s episode of Star Wars Rebels, “Call to Action,” saw the return of Grand Moff Tarkin and, from his first moment on-screen, his was a commanding presence. He’s definitely not up for any nonsense about a band of Jedi-led rebels – as he makes abundantly clear via The Inquisitor.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at the making of this episode in the video below:

Rebels Reconnaissance: “Call to Action” Review

*Spoiler warning: This review contains spoilers for the STAR WARS REBELS episode “Call to Action” and mild spoilers for James Luceno’s TARKIN.

Even though the show is still in its freshman season, several characters from the STAR WARS films have already appeared on STAR WARS REBELS.  But with the possible exception of Darth Vader, none have seemed to be such a natural fit as the one featured in “Call to Action.” Already referenced in “Spark of Rebellion” with that episode’s inclusion of Tarkintown, Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin makes a grand entrance into REBELS that immediately calls to mind the opening of RETURN OF THE JEDI.
