The relationship between droid and organic in the Star Wars galaxy has been one of servitude, with the droids typically giving and the organic taking. In most instances, this is the case, and it’s met with contempt in return. Droids were built to serve the need of their masters. But with some droids developing a personality of their own, and creating long-lasting relationships with their masters, one has to wonder is it appropriate to treat a droid based on their programming? Or maybe we should ask ourselves, do we treat our cars like we treat our washing machines? No, but why?

The third season of Star Wars Rebels has proven to be an astounding one that somehow surpassed the greatness of a second season that heavily featured Ahsoka Tano, Darth Vader and a climactic battle between the two. From the numerous Rogue One connections to the end of Maul, Rebels established its rightful place within the overall saga and continued to show on a weekly basis how crucial the show has become as an avenue for augmenting the established Star Wars canon. The last three episodes I’ll be covering in this post exemplify that importance.

Chopper, AP-5, and Wedge are sent on an undercover mission to acquire much-needed secret codes. As the droids bicker, Wedge sees why he was chosen for the mission. Bickering aside, the mission goes to plan — until Imperials on the lookout for a rebel spy droid catch on to Chopper’s ruse. They soon assume control over Chopper with the hopes he will lead them to the hidden rebel base. AP-5 grows suspicious of his counterpart’s uncharacteristic behavior, but getting the team to believe him isn’t easy.
