In a recent survey, conducted in the U.K., Star Wars beat out Doctor Who and Star Trek as the most beloved science fiction series.

Star Wars garnered 53.2% to the vote, while Star Trek came in second, and Doctor Who landed in third place. The survey was administered by Ladbrokes Games, and 2000 science fiction/fantasy fans participated – 1026 respondents were female, and 974 were male. The participants ranged in age from 18-55 years old, with the largest response coming from those between 25-34 years old.

Other stats of note in the survey: 36.3% of respondents said they’d want the Doctor as their best friend, and 20.4% thought Princess Leia would make a good wife.

Here’s an overview of how the rest of the survey turned out:

The nation’s Top 5 favourite sci-fi/fantasy series are:

• Star Wars (53.20%)
• Star Trek (46.4%)
• Doctor Who (39.25%)
• Marvel Comics (35.4%)
• DC Comics (19%)

• The most overrated sci-fi/fantasy series was Avatar with 27.10% of respondents agreeing. Second to this was The Matrix with 6.05% of respondents agreeing.

The top three best ‘dark’ characters are:

• The Joker (35.15%)
• Darth Maul (12.50%)
• Darth Sidious (12%)

• The best form of superhero transport was the Batmobile with 20.55% of respondents agreeing.

• Catwoman was voted the best female performance with 29.40% of respondents agreeing. This was followed by Princess Leia with 25.95% of respondents agreeing.

The best sci-fi ships as voted:

• The Enterprise (Star Trek) – 20.30%
• TARDIS (Doctor Who) – 18.70%
• The Millennium Falcon (Star Wars) – 16.95%
• None of the above – 7.40%
• Prometheus (Prometheus) – 6.85%
• Red Dwarf (Red Dwarf) – 6.70%
• Voyager (Star Trek) – 4.95%
• The USS Sulaco (Aliens) – 4.25%
• The USCSS Nostromo (Aliens) – 4.05%
• Nebuchadnezzar (The Matrix) – 3.50%
• Battlestar Galactica (Battlestar Galactica) – 2.80%
• Star Destroyers (Star Wars) – 1.95%
• Discovery One (2001: A Space Odyssey) – 1.60%

      You know me – I can be torn at times. Still, if I’m really honest, Star Wars has the edge over Doctor Who – byabouthismuch. 😉

    Wow! Darth Vader didn’t make the top 3 of “dark” characters? I’m a bit surprised.

    Surprised, too, am I to read that the x-wing fighter didn’t make the list. By far the coolest ship! (in my humble opinion 😉 )

      I was surprised to see that 7% chose ‘none of the above.’ How picky can you be? 😉 Of course, I would have placed the TARDIS at #1. It’s not only a space ship, but a time machine, as well – and, she’s alive!!
