The short clip amassed an unbelievable 30.65 million views in the space of a day after being released in April.
The release of the clip created unprecedented levels of excitement among Star Wars fans around the world, with the trailer featuring the return of the charismatic villain-hero Han Solo, once again played by Harrison Ford, alongside his furry co-pilot Chewbacca.
This first instalment of the franchise’s new trilogy will be set 30 years after Return of the Jedi and the viral video has prompted Star Wars enthusiasts to debate and predict the plot of the film, in spite of the trailer’s taunting ambiguity.
Fans will have to wait until the film is out in cinemas on December 18.
Star Wars also holds a Guinness World Records title for the Most successful film merchandising franchise.
As of 2012, the total value of the Star Wars franchise was estimated at £19.51 billion, including box-office receipts as well as profits from their video games and DVD sales, with the much-hyped upcoming movie set to add further to the incredible financial success of the series.
The record-setting, less-than-2-minutes-long trailer now has over 54 million hits on YouTube. May the force of this viral clip continue to awaken excitement and anticipation as we wait for the movie’s release later this year.
