Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Bergman spoke about the future of Star Wars while at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2014 Media, Communications & Entertainment conference today. He made it clear that Disney understands just how much is riding on Episode VII, due for release December 18, 2015. Bergman stated that “the single most important thing is to make sure that this movie is great.”
With ten years of new Star Wars content coming down the pike, Disney is beginning to feel the power of the Force. “If we can get this right, it’s a huge opportunity for the entire company,” said Bergman – apparently while wearing stormtrooper tennis shoes!
Next month sees the premiere of the new animated series Star Wars Rebels on Disney XD. Next year will see the release of Episode VII and, in 2016, the first stand-alone Star Wars film will debut. More theatrical releases will follow – two more sequels, and two more stand-alone films. Add to that the increased merchandising, theme park attractions, more TV shows, and licensing deals – well, it’s easy to see what a big deal Star Wars is to Disney.
Even with the powerhouse that is the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the Disney wheelhouse, Bergman recognizes that “Star Wars has been a unique property, more than any other property.”
Fans should feel reassured that the powers-that-be at Disney really do seem to understand just how important is that they get Episode VII right. (I know I do!)
Bergman went on to address other properties, including Marvel. You can read the rest of the article by visiting Variety.com.
