The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
September 2017

Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the monthly releases in Star Wars storytelling. The Journey to The Last Jedi story efforts have begun!

Leia, Princess of Alderaan

Novel by Del Rey
September 1, 2017

Sixteen years after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, we get a look at Princess Leia and how she became a part of the Rebellion.  We get a close look at her personal life prior to A New Hope and how her decision to join the Rebellion impacted that.

Star Wars: Phasma
Delilah S. Dawson, author
Novel by Del Rey
September 1, 2017

For a character that had great mystery but little screen time, Captain Phasma sure has caused quite a stir.  This novel shakes out the origins of Phasma and how she came to be the head of the First Order’s Stormtrooper army.

Rogue One, Issue #006
Jody Houser, writer; Emilio Laiso, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 6, 2017

We have reached the end of this adaptation of the film. A stunning retelling with some additional content thrown in to make this series worth a read, especially if you like the medium.

Star Wars Adventures, Issue #1
Cavan Scott, writer
Comic by IDW
September 6, 2017

This new series of comics for younger readers contains two stories… Tales from Wild Space: “Stop, Thief” which tells the story of Obi-wan during the clone wars, but is bookended by a storyteller who is a decendent of the children in the Adventures in Wild Space books.  “Better the Devil You Know, Part I” takes place prior to The Force Awakens on Jakku where Rey gets involved in aiding a kidnapped Unkar Plutt.

Star Wars: Captain Phasma, Issue #001
Kelly Thompson, writer; Marco Checchetto, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 6, 2017

This single issue tells us how Captain Phasma escaped the garbage compactor and Starkiller Base prior to its destruction by the Resistance. This is the first in a mini-series filling us in on Phasma’s activities between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: Darth Vader, Issue #005
Charles Soule, writer; Guiseppe Camuncoli, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 6, 2017

Darth Vader has finally obtained the lightsaber of a Jedi, the first step into forging his own Dark Side driving lightsaber.  We get a look at the challenge he must face before the Kyber crystal bleeds, which gives us an interesting what-if scenario for the entirety of the Star Wars saga.

Star Wars, Issue #036
Jason Aaron, writer; Salvador Larroca, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 13, 2017

Sometimes is pays to be small and unsuspecting.  With C-3P0 captured by the Empire, R2-D2 goes on a solo mission to rescue him.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Issue #012
Kieron Gillen, writer; Kev Walker, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 13, 2017

Darth Vader has returned, and is know fully aware that Doctor Aphra faked her death.  What does this mean for our good doctor?

Star Wars Adventures, Issue #2
Cavan Scott, writer
Comic by IDW
September 20, 2017

In this second issue, we get the second part in the story of Rey and Unkar Plutt prior to The Force Awakens.  And another tale from Wild Space, “The Flat Mountain of Yavin.”  I am very curios to see how this story may tie into some of the Jedi lore on Yavin that was hinted at int he Doctor Aphra series.

Star Wars Annual, Issue #003
Jason Latour, writer; Michael Walsh, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 20, 2017

We are already at our third annual for this on going series.  Han and Leia are out scoping for a new secret base but there are others who know of the location, and they want Han dead.  (Taking place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.)

Escaping Starkiller Base, Captain Phasma and a Tie Pilot head off.  What is Phasma up to?

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #019
Charles Soule, writer; Angel Unzueta, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 20, 2017

After going on separate missions, the pilots of Black Squadron are back together.  They are determined to stop the First Order, but how far can they go in this pre-The Force Awakens story.

Star Wars: Jedi of the Republic: Mace Windu, Issue #002
Matt Owens, writer; Denys Cowan, artist
Comic by Marvel
September 27, 2017

Mace Windu deals very early on with the conflict of Jedi being asked to fight in the clone wars, assume the role of generals of armies, which seems to go against everything their order stands for.  How does he come to terms with these changing times?
