The Star Wars Canon Dispatch: November 2017

The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
November 2017

Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the monthly releases in Star Wars storytelling.  We have moved this monthly update to a more strategic point in the month in order to provide a proper look at the released throughout the previous month.

Darth Vader, Issue #008

The Dying Light: Part I

Marvel Comics

Released: November 1, 2017

Timeline: After Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

Darth Vader has taken his place as the head of the Inquisitor Program, after proving himself the most skilled of all the Inquisitors. Vader now gets to the task at hand, to eliminate all surviving Jedi. Having come across a list of names, he seems drawn particularly to one specific name: Jocasta Nu. Can Vader stop her from rebuilding the Jedi?

Star Wars, Issue #038

The Ashes of Jedha: Part 1

Marvel Comics

Released: November 8, 2017

Timeline: After Episode IV: A New Hope

Luke, Leia, Han, and Sana are on a quest for a new location for the Rebel base, while the empire attempts to mine Jedha for the last remaining Kyber crystals. To do so, they call on a character from the previous Darth Vader series, Queen Trios. On the side of the Rebels, we bring in Benthic to the mix.   It seems we have a tie in to the remnants of Saw Garrera’s band.

Star Wars Adventres, Issue #034

IDW Comics

Released: November 15, 2017

“The Trouble at Tibrin”

Timeline: After Episode IV: A New Hope

Luke and Leia go on a diplomatic mission to bring the Ishi Tib onto their side, but the Empire is waiting for them.  The cliff hanger ending leaves us with wondering how Luke and Leia are going to get out of this situation.

Tales from Wild Space: “Mattis Makes a Stand”

Timeline: After Episode VI: Return of the Jedi

Mattis, an orphan on the planet Durkteel, has trouble with some local bullies.  But it is the stories of the heroes of the galaxy, Leia, Luke, Ackbar, that gave him the courage to stand up to his rivals.  A largely inconsequential tale from the viewpoint of Star Wars canon but a heart warming tale that shows how stories of a hero can effect the actions of individuals galaxies away.

Doctor Aphra, Issue #014

Remastered: Part I

Marvel Comics

Released: November 15, 2017

Timeline: After Episode IV: A New Hope

We begin this issue, as many good Star Wars stories do, in medias res (in the middle of the action). Aphra is up against her old rival Magna Tolvan, whom Aphra seems attracted too. EIther way, the focus of this issue is not the mission itself, but to let us know the situation Aphra is in… as master has now become the servant for a couple of killer assassin droids.

Darth Vader, Issue #009

The Dying Light: Part II

Marvel Comics

Released: November 15, 2017

Jocasta Nu has managed to return to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, with the mission of retrieving the information about Force Sensitive children.  It seems she is determined to rebuild the Jedi Order from the ground up, and needs this information to find her next recruits. But her temptations get the best of her, as she sees the Grand Inquisitor in the library, she decides to take action.

Star Wars, Issue #039

The Ashes of Jedha: Part II

Marvel Comics

Released: November 22, 2017

Timeline: After Episode IV: A New Hope

Benthic, the second to Saw Garrera, has captured Leia, Luke, and Han, but the trio manage to negotiate their way out of certain death. They strike a truce with the partisans, and in a change of position for the Rebels, they do not want to partner with them, they just want to supply them with weapons so they can continue to be a force against the Empire. Circumstances change when they are facing down Imperial forces and they have to fight alongside the Partisans, weather they like it or not.

Jedi of The Republic: Mace Windu, Issue #004

Marvel Comics

Released: November 29, 2017

Timeline: After Episode II: Attack of the Clones

Mace has his hands full.  Not only are they continuing to deal with the situation on Mathas, but he has decent within his own Jedi.  The recent actions of the council seem to not sit well with his fellow Jedi Master Dibs. We learn much about Mace’s philosophy and even some of his past through this issue.

Poe Dameron #021

Legend Found: Part II

Marvel Comics

Released: November 29, 2017

Timeline: Before Episode VII: The Force Awakens

Poe Dameron, Black Squadron, and General Leia Organa, and finally located Lor San Tekka, who has also managed to get himself imprisoned on Cato Nemoidia. But Leia has a plan up her sleeve to mount a rescue mission that will certainly make things interesting.
