The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
May 2017

Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the monthly releases in Star Wars storytelling.

Guardians of the Whills
by Greg Rucka
YA Novel by Disney-Lucasfilm Press
May 2, 2017

Taking place in the era between Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One,  and gives us a great look at the history behind Chirrut Îmwe and Baze Malbus, and there involvement in protecting the kyber crystals on Jedha.  While this is a middle grade novel, it really adds a lot of depth to the characters we see in the film, furthering our understanding of their relationship, and even tells us how Baze got that big gun.

Rebel Rising
by Beth Revis
YA Novel by Disney-Lucasfilm Press
May 2, 2017

If you ever wondered what happened between the moment Jyn Erso was found by Saw Garrera and the moment she was rescued from the Imperial Prison by the Rebels, then this is the book for you!  This book shows the growth of this character between those moments in time and dives into her relationship and involvement with Saw Gerrera.

Star Wars: Han and the Rebel Rescue
by Lucasfilm Press (Author TBA)
YA Novel by Disney-Lucasfilm Press
May 2, 2017

Though a book for young children, I am fascinated by this picture book series by Jason Fry, adapting the young adult novels that came out during the Journey to The Force Awakens publishing effort.  This particular entry adapts part of the story from Smugglers Run by Greg Rucka.  This is a story that takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, and is a great way to introduced extended Star Wars stories to your younglings.

Comic by Marvel
May 3, 2017

Adapting the film for a comic book audience, is always under high scrutiny.  Fortunately, the Rogue One adaptation is giving us extra scenes and more in depth looks a moments from this film, adding an additional layer of storytelling that we have not yet seen.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #014
Charles Soule, writer / Angel Unzueta, artist
Comic by Marvel
May 3, 2017

As we continue with this pre-The Force Awakens story line, Poe Dameron gets a bit emotional as Poe’s squadron deals with an internal tragedy.  This issue also was written at a time when the Star Wars community was suffering the loss of our Princess, and that emotion is reflected in this particular story.  This issue kicks off the next arc in this series, setting up for a new adventure as Poe Dameron learns to grow to be a true leader for his squadron.

Star Wars: Screaming Citadel Issue #001: Screaming Citadel, Part I
Kieron Gillen, writer / Marco Checchetto, artist
Comic by Marvel
May 10, 2017

Filling in that time between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, we have our first cross over between Star Wars and Doctor Aphra comic series, which is kicked off by this one shot.  This is going to be an interesting arc as our heros have already crossed paths in the Vader Down cross over event, so there is already a set up to define their initial impressions with each other.

Star Wars, Issue #031: Screaming Citadel, Part II

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #015

Captain Phasma has returned to this series as she now is pulling the strings behind Agent Terex, now serving the First Order without resistance.
