The Star Wars Canon Dispatch
February 2017

Welcome to The Star Wars Canon Dispatch, an unofficial monthly contextual look at the recent and upcoming releases in Star Wars storytelling.

Recent Releases (January 16 – February 15)

Star Wars: Dr. Aphra, Issue #003
Kieron Gillen, writer / Kev Walker, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
January 18, 2017

Time Frame: Between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Canon Influence: This issue takes us to a familiar place, at a time after the battle of Yavin.  It explores another layer of mystery that was hiding at Base One on the fourth moon of Yavin, a mystery for the likes of Dr. Aphra to uncover.

Companion Stories: Doctor Aphra, Issues #001-002 should be considered essential reads prior to cracking open this issue.  To catch all the fun canon references, knowledge of Marvel’s Darth Vader and the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars story is important.

Star Wars, Issue #027
Jason Aaron, writer / Salvador Larroca, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
January 25, 2017

Time Frame: For the most part, prior to the events of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Canon Influence: There is another layer of the force that is explored in this story, further mystifying the lore.

Companion Stories: Star Wars, Issue #026 is essential reading.  Knowing Star Wars, Issue #007, #015, and #020 will provide some context to the larger narrative as to how Luke has been exposed to this story.

Star Wars, Issue #028
Jason Aaron, writer / Salvador Larroca, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
February 1, 2017

Time Frame: For the most part, prior to the events of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Canon Influence: There is another layer of the force that is explored in this story, further mystifying the lore.

Companion Stories: Star Wars, Issue #026 and #027 is essential reading.  Knowing Star Wars, Issue #007, #015, and #020 will provide some context to the larger narrative as to how Luke has been exposed to this story.

Star Wars: Darth Maul, Issue #001
Cullen Bunn, writer / Luke Ross, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
February 1, 2017

Time Frame: Prior to the events of Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

Canon Influence: This issue (and series) gives us a look at the Jedi prior to the Sith revealing themselves.  We get a look at Darth Maul’s past, and what he was put through to become the man we know him today.

Companion Stories: While nothing is considered essential reading at this time, Episode I: The Phantom Menace is where this story is heading, and may serve to bee a good point of reference throughout this narrative.

“Blade Squadron: Jakku”
David J. Williams and Mark S. Williams
Short Story in Star Wars Insider #171
February 7, 2017

Time Frame: Between Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Episode VII: The Force Awakens, intersecting with the events of Lost Stars and Aftermath: Empire’s End.

Canon Influence: As with all the Blade Squadron stories, we get an added layer to the Rebel Alliance, an inside look at a fighter squadron.  This story also gives us perspective of the Battle of Jakku which proved to be a major battle for the Alliance to Restore the Republic, and a deciding point in the war against the Empire.

Companion Stories: Prior entries in the Blade Squadron series will help get a sense of the characters outlined in this story.  There is also a tie in to the upcoming novel Aftermath: Empire’s End.

Star Wars: Dr. Aphra, Issue #004
Kieron Gillen, writer / Kev Walker, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
February 8, 2017

Time Frame: Between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Canon Influence: Directly following the events of Doctor Aphra #003, this issue continues to develop some new stories around familiar locations.

Companion Stories: Doctor Aphra, Issues #001-003 should be considered essential reads prior to cracking open this issue.  To catch all the fun canon references, knowledge of Marvel’s Darth Vader and the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars story is important.

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #011
Charles Soule, writer / Phil Noto, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
February 15, 2017

Time Frame: Between Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Episode VII: The Force Awakens, following the story of Poe Dameron, Issue #010.

Canon Influence: Probably one of the most interesting aspects from this story is the depth behind C-3P0’s character, and the position he had during his service with the Resistance.

Companion Stories: Poe Dameron, Issues #008-#010 lead up to this issue.  While not directly related, I think the story from the C-3P0 One Shot “The Phantom Limb” can have some added meaning to the story here.

Upcoming Releases (February 16 – March 15)

Aftermath: Empire’s End (Pre-order here)
Chuck Wendig, Author
Novel by Del Rey
February 21, 2017

Know Before You Read: This is the final book in the Aftermath trilogy, which take us from just after the Battle of Endor through to the Battle of Jakku, which is expected to be a big portion of this particular novel.  I would recommend reviewing the characters that were first introduced Aftermath as they will all likely play a large role in the narrative of this story.

Star Wars, Issue #029
Jason Aaron, writer / Salvador Larroca, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
March 1, 2017

Know Before You Read: The story of Yoda’s Secret War is beginning to wrap up as this issue brings us to the lesson that Luke is supposed to glean from this story.

Star Wars: Dr. Aphra, Issue #005
Kieron Gillen, writer / Kev Walker, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
March 8, 2017

Know Before You Read: For a story that has no Jedi, we are getting pretty close to the force, or at least the Jedi, in this particular story.  Brush up on Aphra #001-004 before diving into this issue!

Star Wars: Poe Dameron, Issue #012
Charles Soule, writer / Phil Noto, artist
Comic Book by Marvel Comics
March 15, 2017

Know Before You Read: Given the tease that Marvel put out about this issue, we may be getting ready to reveal the traitor among Poe’s ranks who was alluded to in issue #006.  Who could it be?
