New York Comic Con is underway and Marvel Comics has told retailers that it’s got plans for many variant covers for the new Star Wars comics that come out beginning in January.

ComicBook.Com, which had exclusive access to the publisher’s first “Meet Marvel” panel for retailers on Oct. 10, reported that some of the variants planned included a Alex Ross-painted cover for Star Wars No. 1, as well as a trio of variants by famed illustrator Skottie Young for Star Wars, Star Wars: Darth Vader and Star Wars: Princess Leia.

The cover reveals, wrote Jim Viscardi, resulted in “audible gasps” from the crowd assembled. As for the covers themselves, images were not immediately released, yet as previews for the comics start heading to retailers to place orders, they’ll definitely make the rounds.

Matt Moore has been perpetrating journalism since 1985, reveling in Star Wars since 1977 and reading comics since 1974.

Variant covers? I CAN imagine the collective gasp at the NYCC panel. To possibly purchase them all … or to be frugal, and choose only one? That will be the question. What is a collector to do? 😉
