Yesterday was Mark Hamill Day in San Diego! The legendary actor, who brought life to Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga, was recognized for his achievements with a street named in his honor. Friend of Coffee With Kenobi Brian Sims was on hand to cover the event. He has graciously provided commentary on the day, along with a bit of history for context, and some amazing photographs of the honoree, his family, and the many fans who were on had to celebrate.
How San Diego’s NFL team leaving and an actor from a galaxy far far away crossed paths.
The January 12th announcement that the NFL Chargers were packing up and moving to Los Angeles set in motion the events that brought us to today’s naming of “Mark Hamill Drive.”
Located in Chris Cate’s 6th District is a street named Charger Blvd., a street many believed was named after the NFL team of the same name. As public outrage started to build and the process of “cleaning” San Diego of anything Charger related begun residents of the Clairemont neighborhood came up with the idea of renaming Charger Blvd. to something for the Star Wars actor Mark Hamill who grew up in the same area. Hamill lived on Castleton Drive in Clairemont in the ’60s and attended Hale Junior High and James Madison High.
With support from Councilman Chris Cate the idea took hold and formal plans developed to honor the actor.
On June 20th, the City Council voted to honor the actor as part of the city’s honorary street naming program and “Mark Hamill Drive” became official
July 30th 2017 was officially declared Mark Hamill Day by a proclamation from the city council.
City councilman Chris Cate told me today that the process took about five months, ending on the June 20th City Council vote that made it official.
Mark showed up today with his family, his wife Marilou, daughter Chelsea & sons Griffin and Nathan. Even family dogs Millie & Mabel made the trip.
Today’s event was hosted by Lisa Remillard of KUSI News. Also attending were Chris Cate, City of San Diego Council Member for District 6 and Eden Yaege, Clairemont Town Council, President
Helping Mark on the unveiling of the street sign was Lieutenant Grubbs of the San Diego Police Department.
After the media Q & A, Mark took to the stage again for a few more pictures and he literally sat down to sign autographs for the fans that were on hand.
