Darth Vader’s Marvel debut is set to sport at least 17 different covers when it arrives on comic book store shelves this month.

(Darth Vader #1 Alex Ross Variant Cover)While that’s far fewer than the confirmed 68 versions for Star Wars No. 1’s debut last month, it’s still a wide array of variants for the Sith Lord.

The comic is out Feb. 11 and has already surpassed more than 300,000 copies in terms of pre-orders, according to Comicbook.com. (Click on the link to see several of the variant covers.) Star Wars, in comparison, sold more than 1 million copies in its first printing and is headed toward a third printing.

Written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Salvador Larroca, the Sith’s monthly solo series is the first for Vader (at least at Marvel) and takes place after Star Wars: A New Hope and before The Empire Strikes Back.

Like Marvel’s other titles, including Star Wars and the upcoming Princess Leia and Kanan comics, the stories told are all in the Star Wars Saga canon.

Matt Moore has been perpetrating journalism since 1985, reveling in Star Wars since 1977 and reading comics since 1974.
