Disney is planning on serving up Star Wars in much the same way it has served up the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not surprising, since the plan for Marvel has proven to be immensely successful. As CFO Jay Rasulo pointed out at the Goldman Sachs 23rd Annual Communacopia Conference on Wednesday, the summer slump at the box-office did not affect Disney.
“Look, it’s no secret that this has not been a great year for the box office — it is an unbelievable year for us. That’s because we went forward with brands,” Rasulo said.
The model used for Thor, Captain America, and Guardians of the Galaxy will be applied to Star Wars, and that means bringing in (even more) female fans, attracting more of the international audience, and selling more toys and other products.
“We are doing what we do for our Disney franchises … with Star Wars, and it is mirroring Marvel, but we already know the path, so it’s going to go faster, smoother, with the same goals,” Rasulo said.
