The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 37 – Coming Back For More, Part 4. Which Is Actually Part 1…

Ok, here goes. We’ve made our way through the original trilogy, so that means it must be time to go back to the very beginning. It’s obviously not ALWAYS a very good place to start, since George Lucas didn’t start there, which is why we’re discussing it now. And I promise that’s the last Sound of Music reference I’ll make for at LEAST a paragraph. It’s time to talk about what may be the most divisive chapter in the entire saga: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. This may be the most challenging entry in this series for me. Keep reading, and I’ll explain why.

It’s that time again! Are you guys enjoying these? I know I am, so even if you’re not, they’re gonna keep on coming. So strap yourselves in. The next film in my discussion of the things that bring me back to the Star Wars films is the most hotly-debated film in the original trilogy: Return of the Jedi. From the script to the Ewoks to the ending, this is the original trilogy film that has the most wildly-varying opinions associated with it. Some people put it near the bottom of the saga, and some people put it at the very top. For me, it falls near the middle, but definitely upper-middle. I recognize that it has some flaws, but those flaws are not glaring enough to diminish my enjoyment of it. So what is it about THIS admittedly flawed film that makes me develop a hankering for it? And why is it called a “hankering”? Read on to find out!

Hi folks! It’s that time again. We all know I’m a fan of Memory Lane, so here’s another round of rumination for you. As I continue my exploration of what keeps me coming back to each Star Wars film individually, I’m taking a look at The Empire Strikes Back this month. As much as I talked about nostalgia last time, the second film in the saga may hold even more warm, fuzzy thoughts. It is the first movie I remember seeing in a movie theater. My brother took me to see it. I’ve mentioned before how funny I thought “Laugh it up, fuzzball” was to me at the time, so I won’t go into that again, but suffice it to say I laughed so much that my brother got annoyed. I’ve struggled with how much nostalgia should play a role in these discussions, and I think I’ve come to a conclusion.

Hello there! You may have noticed I was M.I.A. for a couple of months. Or, maybe you didn’t. If you didn’t, good. Just don’t tell me that you didn’t. Anywho, I’m back, baby, better than ever, and I’m ready to inundate you with thoughts, feelings, and remembrances. What you are about to read is part 1 in what will be an ongoing series about the Star Wars films. We all love Star Wars, most of us started out with the films, and we keep coming back to them time and time again. We all do this for different reasons, but the one common factor is that they just kind of feel like old friends, don’t they? Or a warm, fuzzy blanket on a chilly afternoon. Or….you know what, I’m gonna stop that right there before I drink a gallon of hot cocoa and fall asleep. My point is this: We love the saga. What I have been pondering is each film as a separate work. What keeps me coming back to each film individually? When I decide that I want to watch one, why do I choose the one that I opt for? I’ve found that the answer is different for each chapter in the saga, and that’s what my next several blogs will be concerned with. I’m going to go through each film one-at-a-time and discover what it is uniquely about THAT film that I am drawn back to. I’m sure I’ll surprise myself with a few of my findings, and hopefully it will give some of you an appreciation for elements of the films you’ve never noticed, or encourage you to consider this topic for yourself and discover your own answer for each film.

The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 33 – Our Little Fandom Is All Grown Up

Well, I’m back from Celebration Orlando. A grand time was had by all. Or at least by most. Probably by all. It wasn’t without its hiccups, but what large gathering of 60,000 people isn’t? The short version of my experience is this: It was great to see some friends again after 2 years, and great to meet some new friends for the first time, including my Comics With Kenobi co-host, the illustrious Mr. Matt Moore. There were a few nice surprises, which I’m sure you’ve read about already: Harrison Ford and George Lucas onstage for the 40th Anniversary Panel, John Williams playing Princess Leia’s theme as part of a tribute to Carrie Fisher, and the reveal of the teaser for The Last Jedi, to name just a few. There was one moment that was simultaneously somewhat surprising and not shocking in the least. Read on to find out what it was!

The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 32 – Good Expectations. Not Great, But Good…

We’re just a few short weeks away from Celebration Orlando!!! Can you feel it? I can feel it. It feels….good. This will be my second Celebration, and it will be VERY hard to top the experience I had in Anaheim in 2015. It was, quite honestly, one of the best times I have ever had in my life. Meeting friends IRL for the first time, making new friends that I’m going to get to see again, eating good food, and being immersed in Star Wars for 4 days was kind of my own version of Heaven. Can I expect the same sort of thrill this time out? Probably not. But that’s ok…

The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 32 – Wait, What Did I Just Say?!?!?

You guys, something has happened. I don’t know when, I don’t know how, and I don’t know exactly WHAT it is just yet, but SOMETHING has definitely happened. Something that has me questioning who I even am now. Something that has shaken me to my foundation. Something…

The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 31 – “Hope”

Ok, it’s been a month since I saw the Rogue One. As if a new Star Wars movie wasn’t enough news, we also have the passing of Carrie Fisher to contend with. My second viewing of the film just happened to be on the day her death was announced, so the final shot of the film took on even more significance than it ordinarily would have. “Hope,” she said. The Tantive IV took off, the familiar John Williams music started, and the credits rolled. Upon my first viewing, I was smiling. Upon my second, I was still smiling, but it was a bittersweet grin, since it was achieved with the knowledge of Ms. Fisher’s demise. Where would things go from here?

The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 30 – That’s What Star Wars Means To Me, My Love!!

It’s the day after Thanksgiving, so I’m still in “give thanks” mode. And that’s what I’m gonna do RIGHT NOW!!

I did the daily Thankfulness post on Facebook this year for the first time (at least I think it’s the first time, the mind plays tricks at my age). One day it was about Star Wars, and how it’s brought so much to my life, so I wanted to take a moment to focus on that with you, my favorite reader.

Don’t call it a comeback! Because….it’s really not. Sorry I missed the last couple of blogs, but I hope you’ll forgive my absence. To paraphrase Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, “Life finds a way…to get in the way.” I won’t bore you with the details, but I would like to thank all my Coffee With Kenobi family for their kind words and support. And now….the main event.

So the final Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer has come out. I saw it, did you? Of course you did. What did you think? Wait, hold that thought. First, let me tell you what I think: I wish I hadn’t seen it.
