Porg Psychology 101

Jay’s Galactic Espressions

Whether you love them or hate them, porgs have become a very popular – albeit peculiar – new character in the Star Wars saga. We were introduced to these little penguin-puffin-birdlike creatures in the behind-the-scenes footage reel for The Last Jedi, revealed at the D23 Expo in July of 2017. Avid fans of the saga have had porgs on the brain since this initial introduction, but the debut of the official trailer for The Last Jedi, which aired during halftime of Monday Night Football on October 9, caused the general public to catch porg fever in a big way! Instantly, the Internet was packed with porgs, including this Photoshop challenge, posted by gizmodo.com.

But, why are these little feather bags such a draw for fans, myself included? I’m not usually one to fall prey to overwhelming feelings of “gotta have that,” but these porgs have certainly won me over! So, I decided to take a look at the psychology of porgs – what underlying reasons could there be for this fanatic attraction? What is the possible connection between avian mythology, bird/human personality traits, and the design choices of the porg character itself?

Core Worlds Couture: Squadron Goals Products Review and Jewelry Tutorial

Core Worlds Couture With Jay Krebs

Welcome back to another edition of Core Worlds Couture! This week, its a two-for-one-deal: a review and a jewelry tutorial!

A few weeks ago, I was searching for some simple porg merch – namely a badge-pin to add to my ever-growing collection – and I ran across a re-tweeted post in Twitter from @My Squadron Goals. So, I clicked on over to the Etsy store (named Squadron Goals) to purchase the pin, and was greeted by an adorable arrangement of Star Wars goodies: enamel pins, phone charms, stickers, and bumper stickers. The shop owner, Courtney Morelock, was kind enough to agree to send me a few phone charms and pins, in addition to the porg badge-style pin I had purchased. As it turns out, Courtney is also one half of  “Who Talks First,” a podcast she co-hosts with her friend, Solo.

The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 29 – Too Much Is Not Enough

MarvinDog Media Star Wars logo(plain)

Don’t call it a comeback! Because….it’s really not. Sorry I missed the last couple of blogs, but I hope you’ll forgive my absence. To paraphrase Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, “Life finds a way…to get in the way.” I won’t bore you with the details, but I would like to thank all my Coffee With Kenobi family for their kind words and support. And now….the main event.

So the final Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer has come out. I saw it, did you? Of course you did. What did you think? Wait, hold that thought. First, let me tell you what I think: I wish I hadn’t seen it.

Star Wars and the Name Game

Jay’s Galactic Espressionslandscape-1450794162-movies-starwars-poe-finn-1

“I call everyone ‘Darling’, because I can’t remember their names.”
-Zsa Zsa Gabor

What’s in a name?

They’re just a bunch of letters that form words, right? Actually, names are so incredibly powerful, that the concept of “naming” has been an integral part of every culture, religion and belief system around the world. Among everything: from objects to people…pets to phenomena, names are as influential as they are immortal.

If you’ve been a faithful reader of my blogs (and I hope you have been), you may be thinking that this subject sounds familiar to you. You’re correct: I spoke about this topic in one of my very first blog entries for Coffee With Kenobi. However, because I’m so enamored with the psyche, power, and philosophy of names in general, I wanted to revisit some new ideas and personal revelations I’ve had since the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as well as some other personal a-ha moments, as represented at various points in the Star Wars saga.

The Conflict Within: Loving and Hating Star Wars: The Force Awakens

In the seven months since the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens I haven’t written anything about it except for a short article on my first impressions of my favourite characters from the film. Which is kind of strange since my favourite movie from 2015 was Star Wars: The Force Awakens. What an amazing film! It’s a movie that made me proud to be a Star Wars fan, brought my son back to Star Wars, my wife has proclaimed it her favourite Star Wars film and my daughter is proud of the fact that 21 years ago we chose Rae as her middle name, spelling not withstanding. I am incredibly excited for the exploits of Rey and Finn to continue in Episode VIII but I should probably mention now that the worst movie I saw in 2015 was also Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s a movie that has made me think that perhaps the story of Luke, Han and Leia didn’t need to continue after Return of the Jedi. At least not in the way that we saw last December.

Whether interested in the fashion/cosplay aspect or not, costumes tell a tale and set a stage like nothing else in a story. “Craftsmanship and artistry in costume design are valued creative components in the Star Wars saga,” said George Lucas. “The detailed precision of a design can be as bold a measure of storytelling as words on a page, leading to the truths at the core of a character, situation or shared history.”

My Recap of Birthday-Worthy Star Wars Reveals!

Jay’s Galactic Espressions

On my 46th birthday (July 16), I was reduced to my 10-year-old self. I laughed, jumped for joy, squeed more than a few times, and quite literally performed at least one happy dance. My eyes were a little brighter, and my steps a little lighter. All because of Star Wars.

And that’s a good thing…a VERY good thing!

When it comes to Star Wars, I’m a big kid at heart anyway, as I’m most (or all) of you reading this right now can relate. Overall, it’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan, but with all of the news that came out of Star Wars Celebration Europe (SWCE) over the last few days, my kid-o-meter has flown off the charts!

The Caffeinated Collector: Episode 27 – …Because I Don’t Already Collect Enough Stuff…

MarvinDog Media Star Wars logo(plain)

My blog is ostensibly about collecting and Star Wars. Not always, of course, but mostly, that’s my focus. I recently wandered down the dark, deep hole of collecting albums on vinyl. I know, as if I have space or the means to take on ANOTHER collection. I have a problem, I know, I’m dealing, thank you. ANYWHO, this brings up a new area of Star Wars collecting that I haven’t given much attention to: Star Wars records!!!! I want them all, the music, the story discs, all of it! And I actually already have quite a bit!
