In which two fans — or possibly two sides of my own brain — debate which of the new crop of movies is better: Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, or Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens
On a recent trip out to LA to visit my daughter, Erin, I was passing the time on the four-hour flight doing puzzles in the paper and crossword puzzle book I brought along. The flight attendant came by to bring us passengers a snack and beverage. I looked up from what I was doing to take my tea and goodies, and as she passed, I espied a special treat showing on a fellow passenger’s tablet screen. [He was sitting across the aisle and one row up from me.]
With the release of Rogue One came a bevy of new characters in the Star Wars universe. Two of the breakout stars of the popular film, Chirrut Imwe and Baze Malbus, are featured in Greg Rucka’s Star Wars Guardians of the Whills, and are more fully formed as dynamic characters in the new book. Rucka beautifully shifts the third person narrative from each main character’s perspective and provides important motivation for a richer understanding of their crusade against the Empire. The Star Wars universe has a rich history of ambiguity, regarding many of their characters’ backgrounds, and with Star Wars: Guardians of the Whills, an intriguing piece of the proverbial puzzle is provided.
NEW NOVELS REBEL RISING AND GUARDIANS OF THE WHILLS WILL EXPLORE ROGUE ONE BACKSTORIES
FIRST DETAILS ON NEW STORIES STARRING THREE HEROES FROM ROGUE ONE.
Jyn Erso, Chirrut Îmwe, and Baze Malbus. Vastly different people who came together, along with some other new friends, to change the galaxy. After their heroics in Rogue One, they’ve become fan favorites — and we’re going to learn a lot more about them in two new books coming May 2.
Rebel Rising, a young adult novel from New York Times Bestselling author Beth Davis, will dive into Jyn’s backstory, exploring her time with the extremist rebel Saw Gerrera and how it shaped the woman she’d become. Rogue One hinted at the once-close relationship between Saw and Jyn, which was ultimately fractured. Rebel Rising promises to be our first real look into what happened between the two, good times and bad. Check out the official description and cover below.
“The strongest stars have hearts of Kyber.” — Chirrut Imwe
There’s something to be said about this quote or dialogue spoken by the Guardian of the Whills, Chirrut Imwe. It’s amazing what one line can do and how it can trigger a plethora of thoughts; not much different from saying a picture is worth a thousand words. These words unleashed a multitude of emotions on me, and I can’t help myself from going back to it.
