Jyn Erso: The New Han Solo?

Has the Star Wars universe become overly feminized or could it be that a portion of our fandom is just not in-touch with their feminine side of the force? Or maybe we’re just not asking the right question. Perhaps the correct question would be: what’s wrong with a female leading the charge? It’s a straightforward question. No hidden agenda so don’t go looking for one or assume that there is one. So again, what’s wrong with it? Or better yet, what’s wrong with the question? Ok I’ll admit, I’m being a bit pretentious or rather, rebellious.

“This is a rebellion, isn’t it? I rebel.”- Jyn Erso

Can’t even put into words how this dialogue moved me! Seriously, my lips curled up like the “Grinch Who Stole Christmas” and I’m definitely ok with that, ha! Let me just also add, that we got more dialogue in the Rogue One trailer than we did in the first two trailers for The Force Awakens! That’s saying a lot. Ok, that’s a poorly used pun, but you get my meaning.

Vader’s Shadow: A Curse of Concealment

Becca's Chava Chat
‘Becca’s Chava Chat’ Original Design by Scott Bratek

With the recent embargo [from advanced copies being distributed] of ‘Star Wars: Bloodline’ by Claudia Gray, and all the built-up hype surrounding it, I can’t help myself but to be swept-up in it too.

This upcoming novel holds so much promise when it comes to plot-holes or gaps where the Skywalker lineage is concerned. Even Claudia Gray told USA Today that, “In this book we find out just how far Vader’s shadow falls.” So, as an ‘Anakin Apologist’ and a huge Vader fan, my anticipation of what ‘key elements’ this story may or may not include is barely containable.

So, for the sake of creative thinking and to hopefully spark some innovative discussion, let’s explore Vader’s “shroud of darkness” aka shadow.

The Galaxy’s Only Hope

“I’m hoping Lor San Tekka knows where to find my brother, Poe. And Luke Skywalker may be the only hope we have left.”- General Leia Organa, ‘Before the Awakening’

In the past 38 years between A New Hope and The Force Awakens, the former Princess Leia, now dubbed General Organa, has found herself right back where she started, searching for her Only Hope. Granted, in A New Hope we are led to believe that Ben Kenobi is the only hope she is looking for, when in fact, it is Luke Skywalker. It’s always been him. They were separated in order to remain safe, safely anonymous and in time, when it was right, they were to be reunited. The force is a calling and when it calls, you cannot deny your destiny or that which is your family, especially if you happen to be a Skywalker.

The Light – It’s Always Been There

Becca's Chava ChatAs Maz Kanata so eloquently stated, the light – it’s always been there, so has Star Wars. For as long as I can remember, Star Wars, like the light or the force, has had a hand in guiding and shaping my life. And thankfully, up to this very day, it still does. Read more

Every Generation Has A Story

Becca's Chava ChatBy now, we have seen at least five or six different versions or trailers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the countdown to the actual ‘premier day,’ is less than a month away! To say that I’m excited, well, that’s more of an understatement at best.

… “Sure you’re up for this?”– Han Solo, Star Wars: The Force Awakens

That’s a good question. Am I? Oh, I’m sure I’m not alone on this one. Be honest, who else felt as if Han was directing this towards the viewer, us, not just Finn? And yes, anyone who has a blog for a website or a podcast about Star Wars has already discussed or analyzed the topic on ‘how to prepare’ for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but that’s not what this next edition of ‘Becca’s Chava Chat’ is about.

BOOK REVIEW: The Dharma of Star Wars

BOOK REVIEW:

The Dharma of Star Wars by Matthew Bortolin
The Dharma of Star Wars by Matthew Bortolin

THE DHARMA OF STAR WARS

By Matthew Bortolin

Synopsis:

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away … Yoda was a Zen Master?

The Dharma is the Buddhist tutelage that guides you throughout the truisms of life’s realisms. Basically, it’s a compass that directs you along the path towards the truth of reality, in other words, real life.

Now combine that belief with George Lucas’s stories of the Hero’s Journey from Star Wars and ascend, all over again, across the stars of a galaxy far, far away in a whole new light.  An enriching and enlightening take on the holy saga, from A New Hope and through the darkness of Revenge of the Sith; a periscope view from a spiritual standpoint.

“THAT NAME NO LONGER HAS ANY MEANING FOR ME” – DARTH VADER

Becca's Chava Chat

Oh really? Somehow I doubt that and honestly, always have. To say something, such as a name, or someone, no longer has any meaning in one’s life, is a flat-out lie. Point blank, you’re in a state of personal denial. Am I judging you or, in this case, Darth Vader? No, I’m simply unearthing the truth, or as Luke clearly stated:

“It is the name of your true self. You’ve only forgotten.”

SKYWALKERS: WE ALL WALK A DIFFERENT PATH

Becca's Chava Chat

Throughout most of the Star Wars saga, we see a lineage of Skywalker descent make choices based on compromise, morals, and their life experiences — in turn, forging a personal perspective or point of view. One’s choices or decisions in life don’t make them right or wrong, per se, rather a sense of righteousness or justification for their own actions. Again, at the time, it may seem like the right thing to do, but onlookers or outsiders may not see it as such. In fact, such perception of oneself would never be considered as a bad person, but perhaps, making a bad decision. In other words, no one ever thinks of themselves as evil.
