In less than two months, my niece will be born. It is such a wonderful time for our family. My parents have been waiting for a grandchild to spoil for a very long time. I am so glad everyone will be paying so much attention to the new addition and they’ll forget about asking me about having children. One of the many pressures of being the eldest of five children. But, let’s save this topic for another day.

We Wear the Mask

WE wear the mask that grins and lies,
It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,

Two years ago, I worked with someone who greeted me daily with, “I am trying to feel you out.” I thought it was hilarious that this person spent so much time trying to figure out the type of person that I am. We live in a world where people are constantly being judged. Despite countless efforts by many promoting originality and being one’s self, many people continue to define others by what they say and do. Our skin color, size, and even hair color are used to categorize individuals.

Sandra, are you Haitian? You don’t look Haitian. Oh, you’re from another country. You listen to New Kids on the Block. You’re not Black. Throughout my elementary, middle, and high school years, these were some of the comments I had to hear from my peers. I blamed their reactions in part on not being exposed to other cultures. I used to stare in the mirror and wonder why did the other kids think I was so different. At the time, I used to giggle and laugh at the comments. I also didn’t realize the negative effects it would have in my life.
